Jani Marjanen

Secretary General of the European Society for the History of Political Thought

I am a researcher at the Centre for Nordic Studies at the University of Helsinki. I obtained my PhD at the same university in 2013. My main scholarly interest concerns the history of political concepts. I have written about eighteenth-century economic patriotism, the theory and methodology of conceptual history, and history of different ism concepts in political debates. My publications include ‘Undermining Methodological Nationalism: Histoire croisée of Concepts as Transnational History’, in Transnational Political Spaces: Agents – Structures – Encounters (2009); and Den ekonomiska patriotismens uppgång och fall (2013). Together with Koen Stapelbroek, I edited The Rise of Economic Societies in the Eighteenth Century: Patriotic Reform in Europe and North America (2012). I serve as co-editor of the journal Contributions to the History of Concepts.

My current project deals with the concepts of nation, constitution and patriotism in nineteenth-century Finnish political discourse.
